Creativity is a paradox-- it requires new ways of seeing the same problem. We live in a world with all kinds of restrictions. And in this world we all have human bodies that each have their own limitations. The artist's life work is to identify these limitations and discover a new reality where creativity transcends and gives us a new way to see the world around us--a world that ought to be. Creativity, therefore, should not be separate from love, but should embody truth, beauty, and goodness. This type of creativity points to the original Creator of all things who put on our limitations by becoming flesh, and out of love, He transcended our reality by suffering and dying for our sins. The ultimate creative paradox is Christ crucified on the cross. The great news is that He did not stay dead. Christ rose from the grave in another creative act of love. As artists, this means that we have hope for truth, beauty, and love to generate this new reality through our making. To rephrase Kierkegaard, one could say, "The creative paradox is the passion of art, and the artist without the creative paradox is like the lover without passion."

"The paradox is the passion of thought, and the thinker without the paradox is like the lover without passion: a mediocre fellow." -Kierkegaard
